You are invited to attend the dedication and renaming ceremony of a portion of SH 21 in Nacogdoches County to the Bob Luman Memorial Highway at 2 p.m., April 15, 2016.
The unveiling will be held on State Highway 21, 1.3 miles from the Nacogdoches city limits. Many special guests and Bob Luman family members will be in attendance for the dedication.
Speakers for this historic event will be Jeff Austin III, TxDOT Transportation Commissioner; State Rep. Travis Clardy; Melissa Luman-Phillips, daughter of Bob Luman and David Stallings, Landmark Productions. State Sen. Robert Nichols will also be in attendance with other state and local officials to mark the occasion.
Bob Luman was a member of the Grand Ole Opry, the Louisiana Hayride and was posthumously inducted as a member of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He was a native East Texan, born in the Black Jack community near Chireno in 1937. He rose to fame as a major country music and rockabilly star before his death in 1978.
The Texas State Legislature in 2015 approved House Bill No. 598 which amended the Texas Transportation Code that set aside a portion of SH 21 as the Bob Luman Memorial Highway. The designation will be between the intersection of County Road 511 and FM 95 at Chireno. The dedication is set on what would have been Luman’s 79th birthday.
We hope you make plans to attend. Parking will be available in the parking lot of Thrall’s Grocery. For more information, contact Rhonda.Oaks@txdot.gov or call (936) 633-4395.
