What began as a change of profession for Charles Pool in 1972 from co-ownership of a local hardware store to selling spec homes for a Nacogdoches-based builder has resulted in a successful real estate firm that impacts thousands throughout the East Texas region.
"I see people today that come up and ask me if I remember them, because I sold their house 20 or 30 years ago," said Charles Pool, founder of Charles Pool Real Estate, Inc. (CPRE). "It's a reminder to me that this is a fantastic business. You have to love people and treat them right."
Through his business, Charles recognizes that he and his team are forming relationships with clients. "It's amazing the bond you make with people who are buying houses. People love to live here, raise their families and they realize that Nacogdoches is a marvelous place to call home," he said.
In addition to establishing new relationships, Charles adds that he is fortunate to work side-by-side with his son Ed Pool, who holds the firm's manager position and serves as an associate broker.
Ed joined CPRE in 1986 as a licensed Realtor. He has been a part of the firm's growth to its place as our community's top company in residential listings and sales with the largest number of licensed brokers. "Dad set the bar high, and I've had a great base," Ed said. "We have a strong partnership. Even when Dad didn't necessarily agree with my work, he let me do it anyway, and I hope to do the same with my son."
Ed explained that choosing agents with a "wide sphere of influence and who are involved in the community" are keys to the firm's success. "We are involved in several organizations such as the Chamber, Rotary, Solid Foundation, Glory Gang and Heartbeat Pregnancy," he said. "It's important to me to know where our agents are involved, where they are going to church, what civic organizations have they joined and what are their hobbies."
Ed followed in his father's footsteps by connecting with people on personal and professional levels. He realized early on that beyond working in a business, being a part of the community would shape a better quality of life that all could enjoy. He has held several leadership positions in the Nacogdoches County Chamber, and he served as the chairman of Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation's board of directors.
A notable difference that Ed has observed in our area that may not exist in others is the significance of Nacogdoches being a "family oriented" market. "We had an agent years ago who wanted to stay open on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, because that was a time he thought would be busy," Ed recalled. "I tried to stress to him that people wanted to be with their families during that time. He worked his theory for a few months, but he realized that family comes first for many in Nacogdoches."
Understanding trends and seizing opportunities has taken CPRE into the realm of commercial real estate. "It's an exciting area, and we are experiencing more growth in the commercial market that will bring beneficial developments to those who live and work here," Ed said.
"I am so grateful to live here and work around the people in our community. The partnerships, the love for each other, the ability to be a part of something this big is an honor," he continued. "I’d like to say 'thank you' to the people of Nacogdoches for making us feel so welcome and letting us be a part of their homes."
For the contributions made in our business community as well as to thousands of families, the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce board of directors has named Charles Pool Real Estate, Inc. as Medium Business of the Year, a Gary Justice Business Excellence Award sponsored by Regions Bank.
CPRE will be honored at the 97th Annual Meeting & Membership Banquet on Sept. 25 at The Fredonia Hotel and Convention Center. Sponsorships and tickets are available. Contact the Nacogdoches County Chamber for more information, 936-560-5533.
