Lufkin, TX – The Angelina Arts Alliance is excited to announce that the Grammy Award-winning RANKY TANKY will be performing under the stars in Downtown Lufkin on Thursday, March 4 at 7 PM. The Charleston, SC, based quintet will perform outside The Pines Theater. As with the other performances that have recently been presented, this will be a socially distanced seated event and masks are required. Tickets are on sale now at AngelinaArts.org or by calling 936-633-5454.
Following their debut album in 2017, RANKY TANKY has been profiled on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and their album soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, I-Tunes, and Amazon Jazz Charts. In 2020, they received the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Album.
The term “Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit the quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston, SC, are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.
The Angelina Arts Alliance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich, entertain and educate by presenting and promoting the arts in East Texas.
