Our Kids Need Our Support
Posted 07/07/2023

Project SOS (Supply Our Schools) is kicking off the 2023 supply drive benefiting students throughout Nacogdoches County. The 2023 school supply drive is in full swing and donations are being sought. Inflation is impacting families in a major way in Nacogdoches County. The need is expected to be huge this year.

Suppliies are secured and delivered to campuses throughout Nacogdoches county.  Local schools know theri kids.  The drive was initiated in 1992 when a serious lack of basicc supplies was noted.  Basic supplies promote classroom success.  The program is administered by Greater East Texas Community Action which allows 100% of all donations to go to purchase supplies.  Swenson commented, "Inflation is impacting all aspects of our lives including this drive.  Many families are experiencinga rise in the cost of living so they wll struggle to purchase supplies.  This year may be the highest need ever.  Local school contacts in every school in Nacogdoches County anticipate great neeed by students.  This effort works county-wide with local school campuses to reach all needy student."

Project SOS is a partnership effort of Community Action, the Nacogdoches Jr. Forum, KSWP Christan Radio and local schools across the entire county.  The goal is to provide supplies to local students.  Families receiving services through the Family Crisis Center are also served.  Donations are delivered by Junior Forum members prior to "meet the teacher" events.  Those in need should contact the local campus counselor or Principal's office right before the start of school.

Local students are involved in the annual "Fill the Bus" event to benefit the drive.  Fill the Bus generally occurs in conjunction with tax-free weekend.  Swenson went on to share "We hope for a successful drive but it all depends on donations both monetary and specific items.  Many businesses who have always supported the drive are also struggling.  Any donation is appreciated.  Buying in bulk really maximizes dollars.

Donations are tax deductable and may be sent to:  Project SOS; P.O. Box 631938; Nacogdoches, Tx  75963.  Online donations can occur by going to WWW.get-cap.org.  Deliveries of supplies may be taken to:  Community Action 1716 South Street; Nacogdoches..  For more information about this project, call Karen Swenson or Rebecca Huss or Gordon Reynolds at 585-7211 or 585-7210 or 585-7215.
