Posted 03/13/2024

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce is preparing for the ninth Lone Star Legislative Summit on April 4 and 5. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions is confirmed to bring the keynote address at the Friday luncheon meeting, and Texas Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham will speak at the LSLS Kick Off Breakfast scheduled for 7:30 a.m., Friday morning.

“The summit planning committee has come together to create a program focused on issues that are important to our region, and we invite all from the County as well as our neighbors across the state to join us,” said Government Affairs committee co-chair Donna Finley. “This is our chance to gain insight into the work that our representation will tackle in Texas’ 89th Legislative Session.”

The summit begins on Thursday, April 4, with the Lone Star Reception at The Fredonia Hotel & Convention Center. A Media Madness panel discussion focused on Texas politics in general will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Banita Ballroom. Josh Edwards, Managing Editor, The Daily Sentinel, will serve as moderator.

On Friday, the summit moves to the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. Along with breakfast and lunch presentations, the following three legislative panel discussions will be conducted in the SFA student center theater:

  • “Yearn to Learn & Learn to Earn: The Future of Education and Workforce Development” with moderator Les Linebarger, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Nacogdoches ISD, starting at 9:10 a.m.
  • “Critical Condition: The Landscape and Trends for Rural Healthcare in Texas” starting at 10:10 a.m.
  • “Build It and They Will Come: The Future and Impact of Infrastructure and Investment in Texas” with Lonnie Hunt, Executive Director, Deep East Texas Council of Governments, starting at 11:10 a.m.

“Guests may attend all or parts of the summit,” Finley said. “There is no admission charge for the panel session discussions, and we offer options for purchasing tickets to meetings with meals included. Our chamber directors are ready to welcome all to LSLS 2024!”

The legislative summit was founded by the Nacogdoches County Chamber in 2006. The last summit was held in 2022, drawing approximately 500 attendees. The event is co-hosted by State Senator Robert

Nichols and State Representative Travis Clardy. Find updates and registration instructions at www.Nacogdoches.org/LSLS. Sponsorships are available.
