Letter Writing Guidelines

Raise Your Hand Texas is asking participants to write briefly about a teacher they loved or who has meant a great deal to their family, and to ask their Texas House Representative and/or Senator to give that person and their colleagues a raise. Our goal is to deliver letters to each member of the Texas legislature during the first week of the legislative session in January 2025.

Joining this campaign is easy! Here’s how:
1. Gather your group: Individual advocacy is important, but the most effective advocacy happens with other people. Identify a group of people that you would like to invite to join you in writing a letter–friends, family, colleagues, fellow members of an organization, etc.
2. Identify your legislators: Lawmakers pay the most attention to letters from their own constituents. Look up your Texas legislators here, and decide if you’d like to address your letter to your Texas House member, Senator, or both.
3. Write your letters: Use our simple guidelines on writing an effective letter to lawmakers to share your stories and feelings with your legislators. Remember, they are in Austin to represent your interests!
4. Mail your letters: Please send your lawmaker letters to our office by January 10, 2025.
