Texas Firsts

Sterne-Hoya Home in Nacogdoches, TexasNacogdoches was the site of many Texas firsts, including:

The first ceiling fan hung in a downtown Nacogdoches drugstore. The fan blades were turned by a mule-drawn treadmill outside.
The first oil well was drilled in 1866 in Nacogdoches County.
The first commercial oil field and oil refinery was located near Oil Springs in Nacogdoches County.
The first district court session was held in the Old Stone Fort.
The first newspaper was set to type in Nacogdoches in 1813.
The first permanent structure, The Old Stone House, was built in 1779.
The first pipeline delivered oil from well sites to storage tanks.
The first wine cellar was in the Sterne-Hoya home.
The first African-American County Commissioner in the State of Texas was Amos Henderson Sr.
